Large amounts of dunite tailings can be recycledfor olivine production from the existing beneficiation activity ofchromite ore in northern Greece. This olivine production aims atthe preparation of a material suitable for the substitution of theenvironmental hazardous quartz sand in the foundries of Europe.In smelting of chromite ore the losses that occur are usually ofthe order of 6-8 percent Cr that report in the slag. Most of this isin the form of oxides that cannot be recovered, but usually 30-35percent is in the form of FeCr alloy that can be recovered bygravity methods. About 90 percent of the produced slag is soldfor road construction after crushing to a desired grain size.Finally, recycling of chromites sludges from the ferrochromeproduction plant through the preparation of pellets, improvedthe total chromite yield by 2 percent.
