REMEDIATION PROCESSES FOR HEAVY METALS CONTAMINATED SOILS

This paper provides information on selectedtechnologies available for remediation of metal contaminatedsoils and industrial effluent solutions. Because some of theindustrial sites are contaminated with organics (solvents,gasolines and oils), an effort has been made to introduce themost frequently used cost-effective cleanup methods, such as"bioventing" and "composting." The microorganisms involvedin these processes are capable of degrading organic soilcontaminants to environmentally harmless compounds: waterand carbon dioxide. Heavy metals and radionuclidescontaminated mining and industrial sites can be remediated byusing adapted heap and dump leaching technologies, which canbe chemical in nature or bio-assisted. The importance of volumereduction by physical separation is discussed. A specialattention is devoted Ur the remediation of soils by leaching (soilwashing) to remove heavy metal contaminants, such aschromium, lead, nickel and cadmium. Furthermore, theapplicability of biosorption technology IR the remediation ofheavy metals and radionuclides contaminated industrial wastewaters and acidic mining effluent solutions was indicated.
