Slimhole injection technology has been used since early 1992 in San Joaquin Valley steamfloods. The major advantages of slimhole injectors over conventional injectors are: (1) low initial capital cost, (2) ability to place wells at optimum locations, (3) improved injection profile, (4) ease with controlling steam breakthrough in individual sands, and (5) low cost access to bypassed oil. There also are disadvantages: (1) limited injection rates and limited downhole survey or remedial work, (2) increased wellbore heat losses, and (3) increased potential for thermal stress-related casing failure.
