The signal averaged ECG (SAECG) uses 3 orthogonal XYZ leads which assumes a dipole cardiac generator. This lead set may not fully record the extent of late potentials (LPs) seen on the body surface. Body surface mapping (BSM) has been used to examine the distribution of LPs on the body surface but their focus has been isopotential mapping. This study focused on the spatial distribution of noise and LP duration on the body surface using a canine infarction model and a 128 channel recording system. Data were recorded and averaged off-line, and isopotential maps of noise and isoduration maps of LPs were generated Noise was non-uniformly distributed over the body surface and there was a spatial correspondence between areas of high noise and areas of short LP duration.
