Laser diode sources take up an important place in the high speed telecommunication development. Having better static characteristics, the quantum well (QW) lasers are generally limited in speed. New design rules derived from recent studies to overcome carrier transport limits and QW strain handling to create new fast material will be discussed as well as technological speed limitations as electrical parasitics and mounting problems. Selected experiments and application ideas will be reviewed including 20 Gbit/s direct modulation, picosecond pulse generation and vector modulation and switching.
