This paper is a tentative study of the stirring unit for glass melt in plate glass making, which is widely used to improve the homogeneity of glass melt and quality of glass product, especially in float glass. By the physical modelling and theoretical analysis, we try to find out a proper way in practical conditon to run the stirring unit better and to make stirring efficiency higher. Experiments have been carried out on the flow current of melt and heat transfer under stirring, with the temperature measurement and flow visualization aided by computer. So the efforts are concentrated on the vertical stirring unit which is common in imported furnace, and the horizontal stirring unit in the most of the domestic furnace. Their characters are simulated and analyzed, researched with the different parameters such as stirring diameter, rotating rate, stirring direction and immersion height. Therefore, some opinions are given to improve their designing, installing and operating. Compared with the two different kinds of units, the solutions are suggested to overcome widespread problems in the horizontal stirring unit. Now some resultes have come to practice in the glass factory, and has gained good benefit.
