A series of PbO-Bi_2O_3-B_2O_3-SiO_2 glasses was prepared and the density, visible tranmission, optical absorption edges, Co-60 irradiation damage and scintillating property were measured. The density of high up to 8.464g/cm~3 can be obtained, and it can resist 10~5 rad radiation damage. The maxium visible transmittance is nearly 80%. The cutoff wavelength of this system shifts towards long wavelength with the increasing amount of Pb~(2+) and Bi~(3+) content. The addition of SiO_2 could make the network of PbO- Bi_2O_3-B_2O_3 glass system more dense. There are a broad excitation peak around 360nm and two weak emission peaks around 418nm and 438nm at room temperature, respectively.
