Optimization of Screw Positioning in Mandible during Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy Using Finite Element Method

Stress analysis of five fixation methods used in Bilateral Sagital Split Osteotomy are performed using finite element method. Geometrical model is built using CT imaging. Mandible is considered isotropic and static stress analysis is performed using linear elasticity. Results are compared to identify the configuration that minimizes the von-Mises Stress values at the entire mode, screws and bone-screw interface to reduce the transferred load to different elements of bone screw model. Results suggest that among the studied configurations Model 3 (Horizontal T), with maximum stress values of 64.59 MPa, 5.29 MPa and 2.67 MPa at the entire model, screws and bone-screw interface, respectively is the optimum positioning configuration to fix the two bone segments.
