Extensive instrumentation is being utilized to analyze and monitor the slab caster mold and strand guidance system. The objectives are to improve slab quality and caster productivity. Significant effort has been expended on developing and applying instrumentation on the mold because most surface defects originate in the mold; abnormalities in the mold can lead to breakouts and the mold is more conducive to instrumentation. The majority of strand guide instrumentation is short-lived because of the hostile spray chamber environment. However, emphasis on strand guide instrumentation has been increasing because the integrity of the strand guide has significant effects on slab quality and productivity. The paper reviews the various instruments available for use on the slab caster mold and strand guide.
