Membrane tanks were developed for the land storage of LNG when the use of post-tensioned concrete became comon practice, especially for large tanks. The desing of the post-tensioned shell is full ysimilar to the design of the concrete outer shell of the full containment type tnaks. The inner membrane, which insures the tightness, iss drectly derived from the stainless steel corrugated membrane already extensively used for LNG carrier tanks. Therefore, membrane concrete tanks combine two laready well known and proven technologies.
