This paper deals with the optimization of networks represented by multi-stage graphs in which nodes are decomposed into stages and are connected only to nodes in adjacent stages. One practical example of these problems, considered here, is constituted by the optimal design of sewerage networks. A two-level dynamic programming method is proposed for the decomposition of such problems. Results obtained on a 27-node network are reported.
