A linear adsorption model has been developed to investigate the effect of the chelating agent EDTA on the adsorption of metal ions by introducing an extended concept of the distribution coefficient. Also batch adsorption experiments were performed on the cobalt, EDTA, and bentonite in order to evaluate the effect of EDTA on the adsorption of cobalt metal on the bentonite. The results of this study showed that adsorption of cobalt metal was greatly affected by the presence of EDTA, even in a small amount, by increasing the total solubility of the cobalt metal and reducing the distribution coefficent up to more than two orders of magnitude.
