In this paper, an analytical method is developed for predicting the compression-after-impact (CAI) strength and load path redistribution of impacted honeycomb core sandwich panels. The CAI prediction method for honeycomb core panels is based on an approximate finite element modeling of the impacted facesheet. Micro-moire interferometry and shadow moire were used to gain a further understanding into the behavior of impact damaged composites and also as a means of verifying the analytical solution. The shape of the analytical deformation and its corresponding stress/strain contours were found to agree well with experimental results for impacted composite sandwich panels. Using this method, the CAI strengths and stiffness of sandwich panels were predicted.
