With the 3-D finite-difference sharp-interface immersed boundary method for incompressible flows (Mittal et al., JCP 2008), various bio-inspired problems have been studied, in which the immersed boundary reconstruction is often required. In the situation of high Reynolds number, complex geometry, and/or big computational domain, immersed boundary reconstruction could become very costly when the mesh becomes very dense. In the current work, a level-set-based fast reconstruction method for complex moving boundary is developed. The signed distance values are calculated in the immediate vicinity of the solid boundary and propagated to the surrounding domain in a highly-efficient way. It not only speeds up the reconstruction, but also improves the quality of reconstruction results. This fast, robust and accurate method can possibly help in the simulations of the bio-inspired problems with complex geometries and high Reynolds numbers.
