The bearing capacity of dry loose sand is one of the key problems considered for a vehicle walking in desert. And it is affected by the way the load applies. Hased on plate-sinkage tests, the effect of two different ways the load applies on the bearing capacity of dry loose sand Is studied. One way is that the plate is horizontal while the angle of the load relative to the plate normal is varied from 0 to 30 degrees, and the other is that the load is always perpendicular to the plate while the angle of the plate relative to sand surface is varied from 0 to 30 degrees. The results Indicate that the bearing capacity of dry loose sand in the former case is higher than that in the latter one.
