The organic nitrogen compounds in water, dominated by the free and bound amino acids, are extremelty reactive with oxidants such as ozone. Few studies conducted to date have examined these compounds however, and very little is known about the types of by-products formed from or the mechanisms of the reactions. SInce these reactions may take place during ozonation for drinking water disinfection, a study has been undertaken to determine the by-products formed by the reaction of both nolecular ozone and its decomposition product hydroxyl radicals, with amino acids in aqueous solution.
