Thames Water supplies 6 million customers in London from five major slow sand filter plants treating lowland surface water. Triazine, phenylamide and chlorphenoxy acid herbicides have been found in the source waters at concentratins above the EC standard of 0.1 ug/1. Advanced water treatment (AWT) is required to remove these pesticides and to control the formation of chlorination by-products. Process options combining ozonation, advanced oxidation processes and granular activated cargon with slow sand filtration have been investigated in large scale trials at the 5 Mld Kempton AWT Demonstration Plant.
