The U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Research, Development & Engineering Center (TARDEC) has been applying computer-based models to perform the quantitative analysis of the operation and dynamic performance of multi-axle Heavy Equipment Transport Systems (HETS). These tractor-trailer systems carrying tracked or wheeled vehicle loads are extremely complex with many interconnected parts, mechanical linkages, hydraulic and electrical systems, power trains, steering systems, multiple tires, etc. TARDEC engineers have developed high-resolution models of the United States HETS (USHETS) and Russian HETS (RHETS), intended primarily to obtain a better understanding of their design and operational performance characteristics. This paper describes two HETS systems and the results of a series of simulations emulating various on-road and cross-country maneuvers.
