Research work into the braking and jack-knifing of quad bike type ATVs with trailed equipment has been carried out, leading to recommendations on brakes and maximum weights for trailers. The work considered the effects of ground condition, surface, ATV size, trailer load, and nose load in addition to the use of trailer brakes. The stability of ATVs was measured on a the tilt table, under six loading conditions, and the effects of driver's weight and rack loads were found to be large. Trials with the ATVs on hill land, under the same loading conditions and with a loaded trailer, were used to evaluate their slope limits.
