A case study of cooperative university/government/industry education and research

A case study of the author's experience and perspectives on cooperative university/government/industry education and research is presented. It is argued that the most effective technology transfer takes place through the exchange and education of people. The cooperative education and research system plays an important role in producing the quality personnel and advanced technology needed to restore the national and international competitiveness of the United States semiconductor industry. Specific first-hand experience and opinions are discussed on the following programs: Clemson University undergraduate cooperative education with General Electric Microelectronics Center; Semiconductor Research Corporation Graduate Fellows program; Graduate research at the Center for Advanced Electronic Materials Processing at North Carolina State University; and Semiconductor Research Corporation Mentor program with Harris Semiconductor and North Carolina State University. An overview of the cooperative programs within Motorola is given.
