The introduction of hydrocarbons inhibits the catalytic reduction of NO by CO in the presence and in the absence of O{sub}2. This inhibition effect has been explained either by carbon poisoning of the active metal when the CO-NO reaction iscarried Out without oxygen (or with moderate amounts of O{sub}2) or by oxygen poisoning in the presence of high oxygen amounts.
