Low-voltage transmission networks (typically 11 kV-33 kV) are widely used to supply electricity directly to customers, particularly to those in rural areas. A relatively inexpensive and user-friendly telecontrol system has been developed specifically for the monitoring and control of pole-mounted devices in this environment. The author presents a brief overview of the system development history, a general description of the telecontrol system itself, practical issues relating to its use and operation, and a summary of benefits to both electricity supplier and customer.
