The authors investigate the performance of gateways with interconnected LANs and in particular focus on how to detect the occurrance of congestion in networks when mixed traffic of voice and data are carried. In the first section they consider the active talker model for m talkers in the system. They present the distribution of cumulative probabilities of the number of active talkers in talkspurt. They then use this distribution as a measure of congestion in the network. In section 3, they present and discuss the gateway performance measured experimentally on their laboratory model of interconnected LANs. The concluding remarks of the paper including the suggestion of a flow control scheme based on a cumulative probability model is given in section 4.
