Broadband-the effects on the private networking market

The modern telecommunications market is a maze of new technologies, regulatory and globalisation forces, fundamental costs changes, tariff uncertainties and other components to add to the de-stabilisation of what was once a fairly predictable market. The paper addresses all these changes and by doing so attempts to clarify the salient issues in understanding the complexity of the modern telecommunications market and how broadband networks can provide private and virtual private network solutions. The paper examines the following areas: general market forces; evolution of telecommunications market niches; development and demand for broadband services; emerging broadband technologies; and what they can and cannot offer the customer. Some general conclusions are also presented.
