General compounding techniques via co-rotating and counter-rotating twin screw extruders of polymer compounds for wire coating

Compounding extruders are used to mix together two or more materials into a homogeneous mass in a continuous process. This facilitates upgrading/tailoring the final product to have specific desired properties. This is accomplished through distributive and dispersive mixing, as required for the particular application. In either case shear forces are required. This is how compounds can be produced for wire coating. These compounds can then be fed into plasticating extruders for a wire coating operation.Compounding extruders perform these basic functions: feeding, melting, mixing, venting, and developing die and localized pressure. There are various type extruders that are used to accomplish these goals, including: single screw, counter-rotating intermeshing twin screw, co-rotating intermeshing twin screw, and counter-rotating non-intermeshing twin screw. The type and physical form of the materials, the properties of the ingredients and the degree of mixing will all have a bearing on machine selection.
