The stranding processes, both helical and SZ-type, typically consist of sections of cabling, moisture protection and reinforcement of the fiber optic cable. The main goal of stranding is to create cable characteristics that meet the requirements of installation and environment. On the other hand, attenuation increase has to be avoided in the stranding processes caused by mechanical stress on a fiber. As is well-known, the attenuation increase means worse transmission properties.This presentation concentrates on SZ-process of fiber optic loose tube cables and especially on cabling section of SZ-process. Loose tube cable is still the dominant construction in the fiber optic cable market and SZ-stranding has become a more and more common cabling method of loose tubes. One reason is that helical stranding machines have strict physical limits because of great rotating masses.
