Public concern for overall fire safety in offices, high-rise hotels and commercial/industrial buildings has increased markedly due to highly publicized fires. In many cases, these fires have cast public scrutiny toward the wiring systems which allegedly have been the cause of the fires, and/or propagating the fire between floors and horizontally across offices. In addition, a recent Illinois fire in a telephone switching facility focused on the corrosivity of burning materials on electrical terminals and sensitive electronic equipment. This incident as well as others bring the issue of the corrosive effects of smoke to the forefront as it relates to the survivability of equipment exposed to smoke while not sustaining damage from the actual fire itself.
