The application of the new metal-oxide high-transition-temperature superconducting materials to low-noise oscillators operating between 1 and 10 GHz is discussed. Stripline resonator structures are analyzed, and values of Q and oscillator power are calculated. These parameters are used to calculate the expected values of phase noise, which are better than those of other technologies. Measurements of residual noise in niobium resonators have been made to identify possible sources of flicker noise. The results show that good performance can be obtained using niobium.
