An industrial market for hydrogen as a feedstock already exists and is consuming 60 million tons of hydrogen worldwide per annum [1]. Industrial gas plants produce and distribute hydrogen worldwide using road transport applications and hydrogen dedicated pipelines for its use in refineries, ammonia and methanol production, along with smaller end uses for the metallurgic, electronics and aircraft industry [2]. Despite this, the potential for hydrogen to be used to reduce industrial emissions has not been considered in most energy system models and long-term decarbonisation studies [3,7,8,10]. This study is developing the first sector-wide model of industrial decarbonisation using hydrogen.
