Development of remote controlled stud bolt handling device

During the regular annual inspection outage at a general nuclear power plant the closure head of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) is opened and then closed to allow refueling. Babcock-Hitachi K.K. (BHK) has developed a Remote Controlled StudBolt Handling Device (RSHD) for a reactor pressure vessel, in which the equipment for stud bolt cleaning, nut handling and stud bolt tensioning has been combined in such a manner that makes it possible to automatically perform all stud bolt cleaning, nutremoval and refitting, stud bolt tensioning and positioning. A considerable shortening of working hours and labor saving can be accomplished with this device and the overall time required for an annual inspection of a nuclear power plant can be reduced.
