Flow visualization tests around ship models in shallow water were carried out to understand flow characteristics in shallow water. Flow in boundary layer and wake of the ship models was visualized by tuft and injecting water colours respectively. Two-dimensional boundary layer separation and periodic Karman's vortices in wake were clearly observed. These flow characteristics are typical feature in shallow water irrespective of Reynolds number and should therefore be taken into account for modelling the shallow water effect on propulsive performance and manoeuvrability.
