Mutagenicity produced by the oxidatns chlorine, chloramines, chlorine dioxide and ozone when used in drinking water treatment was examined in a pilot scale studyconducted at Edmonton, Canada. Both the Ames test, nad a yeast assay usign Saccharomyces cerevisiae (strain D7144-2) were employed. In the Ames test, chlorination produced mutagenicity the most frequently; samples obtained following ozonation were rarely mutagenic. In the yeast assay, mutagenicity was seen only infrequently. Granular activated carbon effectively removed mutagenicity for a logn period of time.
