A heuristic algorithm to partition a PLA(Programming Logic Arrayl into a set of smaller and faster PLAs is described．Our algorithm first partitions the PLA into subcomponents，then，merges the sub-components to form sub-PLAs to satisfy the user's specifications and to reduce the total cost．The partitioning and merging program was written in P ascal and was imple．mented on a Pyramid computer．Experimental results are reported．
