Direct coupling of high-resolution gas chromatography (GC) and electroantennography has added a new dimension to pheromone research. This electroantennographic detector (EAD) system does not require any specialized equipment and is readily added to any GC. The system takes full advantage of high-resolution GC and provides a rapid bioassay of pheromone components and synthetic compounds which can be done directly in a chemistry laboratory. The use of antennae from selected detector species provides extreme sensitivity and specificity for pheromone components. Some examples of the detection of minor pheromone components by this technique and its use in differentiating between closely related species of Lepidoptera will be presented.
