ADVANCES IN UNDERSTANDING HERBICIDE MODES OF ACTION

The herbicide mode of action field has seen important advances in recent years. Not only have new herbicides added new and important herbicidal targets, but also mode of action knowledge for established herbicides has been considerably advanced. New herbicides, with targets in the pathways of amino acid syntheses (acetohydroxyacid synthase and glutamine synthetase), and new graminicides, have been a developmental focus. The modes of action of several graminicides are beginning to emerge together with the modes of action of their antidotes. Very important progress has also been achieved in the understanding of the binding site for photosystem II inhibitors.
