G 821 CCITT RECOMMENDATION CONSEQUENCES ON THE DESIGN OF DIGITAL LINE SECTIONS AND OPERATION SYSTEM

The integrated services digital network offers numerous new services possibilities to the users,hence CCITT defined transmission performance standards for a 27,500 km international link operating at 64 kbit/s.Meeting this new standards involves knowing the consequences on equipments operating at higher bit rates and also defining new operating procedures.The content of CCITT G 821 Recommendation is first recalled) then the procedure used to apply this Recommendation to line sections is explained.In particular, a serial interface is proposed for retrieval of data relating to the quality and maintenance of this equipment.At last, this paper gives a description of the new supervision and maintenance system studied by French Telecommunications services. This system enables to define new immediate or deferred maintenance actions, taking the transmission performance evaluation into account.
