DEUTSCHES FORSCHUNGSNETZ-DFN-OBJECTIVES,PROTOCOLS AND USAGE OF STANDARDS-with special emphasis on graphics communication -

In 1983 the "Bundesministerium fuer Forschung und Technologie-BMFT" (Federal Ministry for Research and Technology) of the Federal Republic of Germany launched a project to develop the infra-structure for electronic communication services for the German scientific community.This project - "Deutsches Forschungsnetz - DFN" (German Research Network) is funded over a period of five years.This paper starts with a general view of the evolution of DFN and its goals.During the initial planning phase the orientation on international communication standards was made a requirement of the technical framework in the DFN project.Then the selection of the protocol architecture of DFN is presented along with a short discussion on its implementations.The third part contains a survey of development activities for an innovative type of communication service - the graphical communication services in DFN.
