Voice transmission is a possible auxiliary service in a packet-switched data network.Using a 2.4kbit/s LPC vocoder in some experiments,we have addressed the following problems:(ⅰ)the integration in the vocoder analyzer of a speech detection mechanism in order to avoid silence transmission;(ⅱ)the organization of packets and vocoder frames;(ⅲ)the reconstruction algorithm at the receiver end in order to provide continuous feeding of the vocoder synthetizer;(ⅳ)the implications for network communication protocols of the integration of voice and data. Some results are presented from subjective tests on the quality of the speech signal.
