In multichannel radio-relay systems,the protection channel can provide a frequency diversity countermeasure for multipath fading,with significant cost savings if compared with space diversity.The operating requirements for a Hitless Switching System,to be used in high capacity digital radio,are discussed and design guidelines are presented,in order to operate "error free" switching even in the case of severe and fast fading events.Finally,the results of field experiments are considered,which show that a significant reduction in outage time can be expected when frequency diversity protection is used.
