As one method to evaluate the drawbar pull performance of the track-type vehicle from the mechanical properties of soil, prediction methods from the soil shear strength under the shoe are often discussed. Usually, soil under the track shoe is sheared by lugs and the shear reactions of soil are estimated as the thrusts, and drawbar pulls are calculated as the difference between thrust and motion resistance. It is incorrect to indicate the interaction between soil and the track shoe merely by the shearing action, and we must consider the other various factors. But, when lugs of track shoe penetrate enough into soft soil, it may be possible to consider that soil thrust is made mainly by the soil shearing. In this report, soil deformations and shear patterns observed by grid system when a model shoe pulled horizontally in a soil bin filled with soft and compressible soil, and the interrelation between soil reaction and shear stress-strain characteristics are discussed.
