The theoretical slope-climbing abilities of tracked and wheeled vehicles provided with load reductions by air pressure relief systems are discussed, and evaluated by simple approximate theories for two representative vehicles on soft to firm, purely cohesive and purely factional soils. The trends of the theoretical conclusions are confirmed by experiment with full scale vehicles on clay and sand of controlled characteristics.
