Japanese first domestic satellite communication system was put into service in June, 1983 by the successful launch of Communication Satellite-2's (CS-2a and Cs-2b), in February and August, 1983. It is the world's first operational satellite communications system using the highest frequency band (30/20 GHz) ever utilized. CS-3 is the successor of CS-2, and is scheduled to be launched in February and August,1988, when CS-2's life ends. This paper briefly describes the CS-3 spacecraft and communication payload configuration and characteristics, and provided services including a newly intended service at CS-3 generation. Technical prospects of the successive high capacity satellite communication system are also described.
