The achievement of a 30km repeater spacing in 140 Mb/s monomode optical fibre systems will remove the need for underground repeaters in the British Telecom (BT) trunk network. This paper reviews the fibre and cable specifications evolved to meet such an aim, describes the results of trials to date and gives an indication of future installation plans.
