In recent years, the use of SSB-AM microwave systems, with capacities of between 5400 and 6000 FDM voice channels, have made possible great improvements in spectrum utilization. Although most were originally intended for analog voice traffic, several characteristics of these systems, primarily their high linearity and superior frequency stability, lend them to other kinds of service as well. This paper describes experiments on the Rockwell-Collins MSR-6 in which 4 video signals (with associated sound subcarriers) or 2 video signals and 2700 FDM voice channels are put on a single RF channel (29.65 MHz). This is basically a 4:1 improvement over the capability of conventional FM transmission.
