TINPLATE IN THE 1970s WORLD STATISTICS: PRODUCTION, TRADE AND CONSUMPTION

The paper gives background statistical information on tinplate to both producers and consumers. Tinplate is a well-established product and continues to maintain its predominant position in the packaging industry. It also represents the major end-use for tin. For these reasons developments in the tinplate industry are closely watched by both the tin producer and the steel manufacturer. The paper briefly highlights the role of the International Tin Council in the world tin economy and reviews the development of the tinplate industry throughout the world with emphasis on recent patterns of production, trade and consumption. Particular attention is given to the new tinplate producing countries.In the 70's world production of tinplate showed an underlying upward trend despite the significant decline in the USA and the United Kingdom. Brazil emerged as an important producer. Exports of tinplate reached new peaks in 1974 with Japan's all-time record of over 1 million tonnes. Exports from the United Kingdom declined appreciably, while imports increased. World tinplate consumption was also upward but most of the increase was accounted for by a faster growth in developing countries.
