A process is described by which conventional temper mills may be operated with lubricant applied to the blackplate strip. This enables clean steels, such as those produced by continuous casting to be batch-annealed and then given a Wet-Skin-Pass to achieve hardnesses which could otherwise only be produced in a conventional temper mill following continuous annealing. The process should not be confused with the double reduction of blackplate which involves heavier reduction of the steel strip.
