Transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction techniques have been used to investigate the composition and structure of the oxide films on eiectrochemically treated tinplate coated with an epoxyphenolic type lacquer, with a view ultimately to correlate these observations with the adhesion of coatings.Experimental observations of the passivation film structure and composition on lacquered tinplate will be presented. Since, as is known from the literature, the oxide films on tinplate are very thin layers, transmission electron microscopy can provide a useful approach in studies of their structure and morphology.
