Development of new technology to use higher-strength steel and reduced tin coating weights for drawn-and-ironed beverage cans has been the goal of a project conducted by Owens-Illinois, Inc. and Bethlehem Steel Corporation. A high-speed pilot line was constructed to evaluate canmaking processes and can performance. Production-scale manufacturing trials were conducted in a commercial can plant. Can performance was evaluated in pack tests. This paper is a progress report on the status of application of T 61 continuous-annealed E 1.1/1.1 tinplate for lightweight steel drawn-and-ironed beverage cans.
