SOME EXPERIENCES IN MODELING THE TERRAIN-VEHICLE-DRIVER SYSTEM

For a considerable time, both the mobility research community and the users of ground vehicles have been asking for a methodology that permits an objective evaluation of vehicle mobility, taking into consideration the various interactions within the overall terrain-vehicle driver system. With the "Army Mobility Model" of the U.S. Army, a methodology is now available that provides decision aids within the areas of vehicle design, procurement, and deployment. This paper reports about the experience gained in using this methodology at Battelle-Institut e.V., Frankfurt am Main. The possible applications of the model are summarized, The results of validation testing using a 1.5-t truck are presented. The speeds achieved with the vehicle in trial runs are compared with corresponding speeds from simulations. The validation was conducted both on a sub-model basis and on an overall model basis. Possible sources of error were identified. Finally, three examples are given for cases of applying the methodology to actual problems of evaluating vehicle mobility.
