INTERACTION OF A DRIVING LOW-PRESSURE TIRE WITH SOFT SOIL BY THE CS APPROACH

Considering the phenomena, which occur in the contact area, wheels with low-pressure lugged tires behave rather differently than tracks. Particularly, wheels do not observe the Bekker's rule of linear relationship j = s × (s means the slip) and exhibit instead a special wavy function, which complies with the proved existence of sheer stresses in the contact area on firm ground directed towards its centre. Author's late colleague, A. Kment, had derived the respective two-dimensional formula in 1957. The CS (compression-sliding) approach attempts to make use of this function in updated form to evaluate the thrust-slip relationship of different driving tire sizes (data taken from catalogues) and lug configurations, which simplifies the decisions on tire design. This paper describes fundamental elements of the respective technique with examples.
